‘Knock ’em Dead’ Cold and Flu Potion
Ever since I was a young child, I have been obsessed with herbal medicines and magical potions. So it\’s probably no surprise that I ended up studying herbal medicine and now have a very overgrown garden full of beautiful culinary and medicinal herbs. Where one person sees a weed, I see a potential medicine or salad ingredient.
This is also probably why many of my stories contain witches and magical potions – I just can\’t get enough of them. I think children also share a natural curiosity for making potions and I hope that my stories encourage this experimentation and passion.
We\’re now a few weeks into a very wet Autumn and cold and flu season is just around the corner. Many people will be racing to the chemist for some pharmaceutical cold and flu tablets but not me. If any of those germs dare show their face around my house, I\’ll be whipping up a batch of my very special \’Knock \’em Dead\’ Cold and Flu Potion.
You see cold and flu tablets don\’t kill the cold and flu viruses. Neither do they help your body fight the viruses in any way at all. In fact, they suppress your body\’s immune response by lowering fever and reducing mucous – it\’s kind of like taking the guns away from your army because you don\’t like the noise they make except now they have nothing to kill the baddies with. (I\’m not pro-guns BTW before you start leaving outraged comments at the bottom!)
The point is, there are many herbs that actually support your body\’s immune system and kill the bugs which means you actually get over your cold quicker (instead of wondering why you just can\’t seem to kick it after 4 weeks – maybe too many cold and flu tablets?).
I am going to share with you my \’go to\’, \’swear by it\’, \’never fails\’ herbal formula to kick those cold and flu germs in the pants. And it\’s made from easy to find ingredients that most people will already have in the house.
This thing is so good it even works for man flu!

\’Knock \’em Dead\’ Cold and Flu Potion
(Makes one mug)
Ingredients
Lemon wedge
1 tsp raw honey
1 fresh garlic clove, sliced or smashed
Few slices of fresh ginger or a pinch of ginger powder
Optional extras (to supercharge your potion – use as many as you have)
Homemade chicken broth
Few slices of fresh turmeric or a pinch of turmeric powder
Pinch of ground cinnamon
Pinch of chilli powder
1 tsp fresh thyme
Method
Add all ingredients to a mug of boiling water or hot chicken broth, if using,
Stir and allow to brew for 5 minutes before drinking.
Drink 3-5 mugs per day until you\’re feeling better.
Awesome for kids – just scale it down if they\’re littlies e.g. give half a mug 3-5 times per day.
